Make sure that all the areas surveilled are well lit. You should check the camera system in all types of light conditions to work out what is optimal for viewing purposes. Often people forget to check until it is too late, not realising that at certain times of the day or night the CCTV footage is virtually useless.
Check all the lenses. Go around with a clean cloth and some window spray and clean all the lenses of your cameras. It is amazing how quickly they can get dirty and that loss of resolution may be the difference between a blurry criminal who gets away and a crisp, caught criminal.
Make sure that since they were installed no one has put new lighting in that points directly at the cameras as this will obscure the image. This happens quite often and renders a CCTV system virtually hopeless.
Check for hardware and software updates. Because the pace of technological change is so fast, you need to check if there have been any updates that could make your system far more effective.
