Making Sure You Get The Best Out Of Your CCTV Security System

So, you have got a CCTV security system, but are you getting the most out of it? Many people get them installed and then become lax, allowing the utility of their system to slip. Get the most out of your CCTV security system.

Make sure that all the areas surveilled are well lit. You should check the camera system in all types of light conditions to work out what is optimal for viewing purposes. Often people forget to check until it is too late, not realising that at certain times of the day or night the CCTV footage is virtually useless.

Check all the lenses. Go around with a clean cloth and some window spray and clean all the lenses of your cameras. It is amazing how quickly they can get dirty and that loss of resolution may be the difference between a blurry criminal who gets away and a crisp, caught criminal.

Make sure that since they were installed no one has put new lighting in that points directly at the cameras as this will obscure the image. This happens quite often and renders a CCTV system virtually hopeless.

Check for hardware and software updates. Because the pace of technological change is so fast, you need to check if there have been any updates that could make your system far more effective.

What Goes Through a Burglar's Mind When Planning For a Robbery?

If you own a home, a business or an organization, it pays very well to be able to know how burglars think. This way, you will be able to pre-empt every move they make. So, how do you do this? You simply pre-empt what goes through their minds.

Burglars tend to think in the following ways:

1. Get in and Out Fast

The burglar has just one thing on his mind: Get my goodies and run like mad. Usually, they just think they want to break in, steal what is precious to you or what they are targeting, vandalise the property if that is what they want and then make away. The average burglar does not have time to waste and will usually just rifle through things, valuables and so on.

2. Money and other Valuables are in the Master Bedroom

Typically, most people keep their valuables in the master bedroom. The average burglar knows this and takes advantage of this. Usually, they are thinking: Hit the master bedroom first, check the study and library and finally, other bedrooms. Unfortunately, they are right most of the time. And with their experience, they are often able to spot where the jewelleries, purse, money and so on. Since many people leave all these buried in their drawers or bedside reading table, this is where the burglars go first.

3. Let me Check the Place Out First

Burglars are hardly outsiders. Most times, they are people who live within a mile or two of the neighborhood. What they do is monitor your movements and the activity around the house for a few days to two weeks. While they are doing this, they are mapping out your movements and that of your family or the people around, studying the possible presence of security gadgets and so on. Usually, if they find that there is little or no form of security, they get ready to burgle the place and make away with their lootings.

4 The Easiest Point of Entry

Research has shown that homes are broken into every minute all over the world. And most of the time, these burglaries are executed by thieves who just walk in the front door, pick the locks and enter the home. For businesses, acting like cleaners often gets them in and out without anyone raising an eyebrow. Other easy points of entry include the roofs, open windows, basement windows, and tree branches near the home and so on.

5 Threaten them if need be

In most cases, burglaries are carried out by teenagers who may or may not be armed. But some of these burglars go into the homes armed with a knife or a gun just in case they find someone at home.

Now that you have an inkling of how they think, go get yourself some security, get rid of all easy entry points and generally, make it difficult for the thieves for come and go with ease.

Security Systems : Innovations and Changes

With the development and economic well being instance of housebreaks and vehicle jacking have arisen. Its a well known fact that development be it economic, social or industrial gives a spurt in the crime rate. More advanced technology is the need of the hour to combat such anti social activities which give sleepless nights to home owners who choose to live in a peaceful manner.

In a world driven by technology, it is important to stay on top of all the changes that are occurring. Security is an area that is driven by technological developments and there have been a number that have begun to revolutionize the security sector. Technology has not only advanced in the security arena there have been considerable advances in the methods and gadgets of thieves and burglars. Its important in this scenario that we remain prepared for any incident of security breach rather than having a look at our loopholes after an incidence has taken place.

The first major trend has been the ever increasing capability of closed circuit television (CCTV) systems, which has been paralleled by their ever decreasing size and cost. The decrease in size has only helped security agencies to keep a close tab with the maximum camouflage. Whereas twenty years ago, a CCTV system was out of the reach of most people, now pretty much anyone can afford to have a comprehensive and reliable system installed in their home for a reasonable price.

Another exciting trend has been in the progression of motion sensors. The latest motion sensors are extremely sensitive, yet are able to guarantee a low rate of false alarms. They are also able to be mounted in just about any area so that you can provide total coverage of your property.

Lastly, there are new and exciting smoke security systems, which use a combination of smoke and strobe lights to daze and confuse burglars. These systems have proved extremely effective at scaring a perpetrator off before they have a chance of taking any possessions.

Home Security is Must and here are Some Tips

No one likes the idea of thieves getting into their homes and properties. Unfortunately, it is a widely expressed opinion that a burglar or thief will get in if he is a little more industrious and experienced.

So, while a few thieves might be resourceful and seemingly unstoppable, it is possible to make their entrance nearly impossible or very difficult. With this, even the majority of them that cannot think or are not resourceful can be deterred. Here are a few ways to discourage burglars from entering your home.

1. Install Deadbolt Locks

Typically, most homes have cheap spring latch locks that will give way with just one determined kick from the outside. Others have glass frames that can be easily shattered without any harm whatsoever to the burglar. To prevent any easy entrance, install deadbolt locks that can be opened from the inside. An even better option is the double dead bolt lock. These locks are strong in that the throw connects with the frame, making it harder for the door to be kicked open.

2. Replace the Screws in the Lock and Door Hinges

Most screws used in securing the door to the door frame and the keys locks are about an inch in length. Remove these and screw the locks and door hinges with screws that are at least three inches. This helps attach the door hinges, but also passes through the door casing into the door frame. So, whoever wants to kick the door down will have to be ready to kick the frame down too- a pretty difficult thing to do without attracting attention.

3. Look Out for the Windows and Patio Doors

The patio doors and windows are normally built and positioned so that it will be easy to unhinge them and clean them. While this is good, it also makes access to your home easier. So, to prevent this, add screws to the top track of the windows of patio doors. Do not drive them all the way in. Leave about a quarter of an inch outside. This way, the windows and doors will not be unhinged while closed. For cleaning, you can easily unhinge by opening patio door or window and lifting it out of its hinges.

4. Trim All Hedges and Grown Grass

While a lawn and good hedges are great and offer some form of privacy, they can also be hiding places for lurking burglars. So, ensure that you grasses and hedges are trimmed properly. Prune all trees that are close to the house as burglars may be able to access the house through branches that are closer to the window or roof.

5. Install Motion Detectors, Alarms and Security Lights

Finally, install motion detectors, security cameras, alarms and security lights. Burglars are less likely to attempt breaking into a place whose compound is well lit. And even when they do, the combination of motion detectors, alarms and security cameras will make entry into the home, nearly impossible.

Working of an Alarm System

Many people are beginning to buy alarm systems for their own private use at home, in the office, in their stores and shopping malls. Hardly will you find a business that does not have some form of alarm installed as part of its security measures.

Regardless of the cost and sophistication however, alarms are basically centered on the same concept.

1. Circuit Breakage

Most burglar alarms are basically built around the circuit breaking concept. The idea is to create a circuit so that when the flow of electricity which usually powers these alarms is interrupted, the alarm gives off its chimes, warnings, and notifications of a forced entry. There are usually two types of circuits: the closed and open circuits.

The closed circuit is installed in a way that once the door is closed and the alarm activated, the electricity flows from one point to the other. A sudden break in this flow is what triggers the alarm. In the open circuitry, the alarm is not triggered until the door is open. In open circuits, there is no flowing current until the house is broken into. As soon as the door opens, the alarm is triggered.

2. Motion Detection

While the circuit alarms are pretty good, they seem to function properly for the perimeter or the surroundings of the building. Motion detection however, is better for the insides of the property. This is mostly because a burglar’s movements can be erratic. To spot their movements, a motion detector would be best. Motion detection alarms are broadly categorized into Radar-based and photo-sensor motion detectors.

The radar-based motion detector does its work by simply detecting incongruent patterns and intrusion. Usually, the device emits ultrasonic sound waves to a reflected surface. When the waves are reflected without any intrusions, the alarm is not triggered. But as soon as the pattern is disturbed, the alarm is triggered.

The photo-sensor alarm works by simply registering a break in its directed light beam. So, the beam could be typically pointed across a doorway. As soon as that beam is interrupted, the alarm is triggered.

How Vulnerable is Your Business Premises

The rate of burglary is increasing annually and isn’t likely to let up anytime soon. As a result, business owners, organizations, companies and firms ought to be more careful and security conscious. For those who really do not see any reasons to install extra security because they have security guards, it should interest you to know that burglary is the highest committed crime globally.

Worse still, businesses stand a higher chance of being re-burglarized than homesteads and non-business properties. The reason for this is obvious; businesses have more assets which are highly priced and valuable. For example, companies could lose trade secrets to their competition who buys the stolen information from the burglars.

Apart from this, businesses generally run software and use a lot of hardware during their daily business activities, sell goods and merchandise among others. Burglars figure that laying hands on such equipments can put more money into their pockets. And they also know that the companies will surely have to buy another set of hardware and software that they would use to run the daily affairs of the business. This therefore, makes businesses open to being burglarized again.

Also, business premises tend to be vacant in the evening. Unless in certain cases where the company has a lot of research going on in their labs, chances are that just one or two security guards will be on guard and they may or may not be properly trained and equipped to handle two or three burglars at the same time.

Popular routes of entry often include doors and windows which can often times, be opened with the use of lock pickers or master keys. These days, some burglars are even very savvy technologically. With this knowledge, they are often able to deactivate simple alarm systems in the building by simply shunting the power cables or manipulating the grid or main power source.

Other points of entry include flat roofs, hatches, cellars, basements and so on. These many places make it very possible for unprotected, unsecured or lightly secured offices to be easily accessed. Apart from this, cyber thieves who are usually just interested in software, company data and so on are often able to hack a company’s computer local area network to access their data from Wi-Fi hotspots or via the company’s own wireless network.

Business premises are also, vulnerable during the holidays when people can be away from the office for days on end. This is particularly common during the long holidays like Christmas. These long breaks make it very possible for burglars to easily plan their attacks, access a business’s premises and make away with their loots. Since most companies are virtually without fences these days, it is even riskier as fences can attempt to keep away burglars.

As you can see, your business’s premises are not safe without security measures. This is not just about installing simple alarm systems. To get maximum security, you would need to install security devices like CCTVs, Roller shutter doors, anti-ram barriers, steel hinged doors, security floodlights, motion detectors among many others. Consult with a security firm today and your business premises will be safer, secure and your company assets and equipments protected.

How Can a Security Dog Prevent Theft?

Unless you live on Mars, you would have been aware of the rate in which people are getting mugged, and homes are broken into. The sad thing about this is that most times, burglaries like this could have been prevented if home owners had made an extra move to prevent it. By this, I do not mean bell alarms –those are a dime a dozen and we know they hardly work these days as the burglars know how to deactivate them. I mean full security systems.

It is understandable that right now, things may be difficult and you may not be able to afford it as a result of the recession and lack of jobs. But what are the chances that even the meagre resources you have will not be stolen by thieves?
This is why you need a security dog. A security dog can prevent theft by:

1. Barking and Alerting Neighbors

Security dogs are often trained to spot intruders or notice unusual activities. With the approach of an intruder, the security dog can scare them away by consistently barking and growling at them. Inexperienced thieves and burglars are often deterred by a dog’s barking if they find they can’t get it to calm down.
Apart from this, neighbours are often alerted and will always look out to see what the cause of the commotion is.

2. Scaring the Thieves and Burglars off

Usually, security dogs are trained to charge and attack intruders mildly or non-lethally. Thieves and burglars want to just get in and get out and usually cannot handle the aggression of a dog. Even tiny poodles, when noisy and relentless, can have the thief scurrying for safety away from the grounds. So, this scares them away and forces them to go look elsewhere for their victim.

3. Its Presence

Most burglaries are carried out by amateurs who do not want to waste time doing anything more than just getting their goodies and getting out. Usually burglars will veer away from a property if they notice the presence of two or more dogs on the grounds.

4. Personal Attacks

Security dogs can be trained to actually bite any intruder and injure them to the point that they are immobilized. Security dogs like that would need to undergo a lot of training and must have bonded with no one else but the master and the household. Dogs like this should be kept locked in the kernel when there are visitors around and within fenced compounds. Security dogs that are often effective for this include Bull Mastiffs, Dobermans, Rottweilers and German Shepherds.

5. Training Them to Accept Stuff from Just You

To prevent the dog from being seduced by outsiders, you should train your dog to take food from just you alone. There are different dog training packages and training programmes available to make this happen. This way, you can be sure that no matter what, your dog will not be seduced by the arsenic-laced meat that most burglars carry around.

Reasons Why You Need Patrolled Security

For many people, the thought of enlisting the services of patrolled security services hasn’t even crossed their minds. This is mostly due to the fact that not many people are aware of their benefits.

Patrol guard outfits are basically security outfits and companies that are equipped with highly trained security professionals who specialise in getting preventing break-ins or standing off thieves before the police arrive; much like the paramedic before the doctor. Security patrols are really important if you can afford them. While they are not cheap, they can help beef up your security.

Some of the reasons why you need security patrols include:

1. High Crime Neighborhood

If you live in a high crime or high density neighbourhood, then you know that even with security systems, thieves and intruders can still break in. Security patrols, designated to a specific area, can easily get to the scene within a minute or two of an alert. This is often effective in that while the thieves and burglars might be trying to get away, the guards can chase them down and specifically aid the policemen in locating and finding the robbers before they escape. Often times, security patrols can make the difference between lost goods and recovered property.

2. Active Off-Duty Police Officers

Most times, security patrols are often active police officers who work with the security outfit when they are off-duty. This helps them earn some extra income while they still do what they know how to do best. The added advantage of police officers who are also security patrols is that they know
and understand the neighbourhood –a huge advantage, as they know where the nooks and crannies are and who the criminals are.

3. Access to Alarm Stations

Security patrol outfits often work in tandem with alarm stations, security companies, and the police. Therefore, when an alarm is triggered, they can easily get to the spot before any other law enforcement agencies if they are assigned to that area because of their close proximity.

4. Cell Phone Numbers/Backup Security

People in the neighbourhood often have access to their phone numbers or beepers so that even while the alarms might have gone off, they can easily reach the security guards who will in turn call for back up before going to the location.

5. Vacation Monitoring

No matter how hard we work, it is important to take a vacation once in a while. Research has shown that many homes and properties were broken into while the occupants were away on a vacation.

With a security patrol, you can go on your vacation with peace of mind while they watch over your place during their rounds.

6. Protect Multiple Client Premises

They can protect multiple premises in the same neighbourhood if the neighbourhood doesn’t want to take on their services. So, if you feel the fees are on the high side, you can easily contact a neighbour and split the bill with them.

5 Reasons Why You Should Install a Surveillance Camera

The average metropolitan city boasts of some of the highest crime rates. And one of the major crimes committed in Australia and globally is burglary or stealing. Most thieves are largely successful at this because many home owners are careless about the security of their homes and properties.

You will find for example, that many people tend to just install a latch on the back of their door in the hope that it will keep burglars out. Unfortunately, the only thing it does is stall them for just a second or two. The average petty thief is often able to kick open a door with a latch within a few seconds.

Sadly, many people do not see the need to install gadgets that will help deter the vandals.

Here five reasons why you ought to get at least a surveillance camera.

1. Tracking of all Activities

Most surveillance cameras come with a recorder that takes note of all the activities at home. Depending on which type you choose –analogue or digital/IP cameras- you can either get a limited or wide area view of your property. With a surveillance camera, you can easily track and monitor all that is going on in and around your home, office, building, etc.

2. Helps Spot Unusual Activity

Research has shown that just before breaking and entry, there is some sort of unusual activity in and around the property that was burgled. It could be in the form of unknown persons scouting the perimeter of the property, looking at the house and communicating with each other using gadgets like cell phones and walkies-talkies. In most instances, the activity usually shows the culprits doing a quick survey before breaking into the property.

3. Can Help Track Individuals

Most times, when you have surveillance cameras installed, you will find that simply consulting the recordings will show who broke into your property, what time they did it, what they took from the premises and where they took when they made their getaway. These simple details can be the difference between recovering and losing all stolen property.

4. Police Can Use the Recordings

When the police get involved, they often track and find the thief within 2-3 hours as they can easily crosscheck the face on the camera with the millions of people in their database across the nation.

Since most burglaries are carried out by people living in the immediate vicinity, chances are that you could find the thief within a few hours of consulting going through the records. If they live in the neighborhood, simply playing them the tape will cause them to return your stolen property.

5. Deters Criminals

If you have prominent CCTV cameras installed in obvious places like the porch and gate, thieves will naturally avoid your property as they cannot risk identification and jail terms. So, not only are they deterred, they are even likely to keep away from adjoining properties.

4 Reasons Why You Should Choose Security Over Insurance Anytime

“Should I choose security or insurance? Should I forget about security and get some insurance instead?” many people ask these questions when they are faced with a dilemma of choosing between one or the other. The ideal thing is to have the two of them as they could complement each other. But if you must choose one and would really like some help as to making up your mind about which would be better, it would be beneficial if you chose security right now. Why is this?

1. Security Protects Your Assets NOW

If your business is not secure, you might as well not bother with any form of insurance. Insurance will not be there to prevent the thief or corporate spy from getting access to trade or company secrets. Neither will it prevent the company building from going down in flames in the event of a fire outbreak. However, when you have security systems installed, all of these are usually prevented; and in cases where the harm might have been done e.g. fire outbreaks, they can be nipped in the bud by alerting the relevant outfits or neighbours.

2. Insurance Claims are Paid When Security is In Place

Like it or not, no matter how much premium you have paid your insurance firm, your claims will be rejected and no compensations will be paid out to you if you do not have a security system installed in the first place. For instance, if your car doesn’t have the least form of security like car alarms or steering locks and it gets stolen, your car insurance firm will carry out its investigation. And when it finds that there was no form of security –which made it easy to steal the car in the first place- you will not get any compensation whatsoever.

3. Security Takes Care of the Now and Later

Security addresses the immediate problem of keeping your property safe from harm and theft, while insurance is more of a backup in case the security system doesn’t succeed in preventing the damage. Therefore, when you install motion detectors, security cameras, alarms, night vision and GPS tracking devices among others, you are safeguarding your property now and in the future.

4. Saves More Money in the Long Term

Installing a security system in your office, your car, and your home saves you a lot more money in the long term. While installing the security devices might seem expensive right now, the benefits are huge. Think about it: if you lose your car to thieves, or burglars break into your office, short-circuit the safe and get away with that blueprint for the multimillion dollar deal you ought to sign in 3 days just because you prefer insurance, how would you feel? The cost of retrieving the information, car and lost valuables will be high, not to mention the fact that the insurance company wouldn’t even consider your compensation claims if they find you were careless.

Do I Need Armed Patrol?

With the rate at which people are getting mugged, robbed, raped, pillaged and killed during scuffles and home break-ins, it is not surprising if a company or an individual wonders if he needs an armed patrol. This has become necessary in the face of rising crime waves and increasing harm caused to innocent victims who may just be bystanders or home owners.

Armed patrols are a good option if you can afford it. But, before getting an armed patrol team, why not try outfitting your business and home premises with highly effective security systems. The benefits of this are many and include.

1. 24 Hour Monitoring

You could opt for a 24 hour monitoring system solely dedicated to your own property alone. This security system serves you and you alone for as long as it is activated. Armed patrol on the other hand, does just that: patrol. This basically means that if thieves are hell bent on getting access to your property, they can easily monitor them, time them and plan their attack or break-in and getaway when the patrol goes around the block or neighbourhood.

2. Immediate Alert

While the armed patrols could be having lunch, a thief can be in your home having a field day going through your things without interruption and making away with some goodies. A security system never needs lunch, dinner or breakfast. It has its own “meals” already in-built in the form of power and battery. This way, it will run uninterruptedly for a long time. And in the event of weak batteries, most systems are programmed to immediately call “home” (the security firm) and alert the firm which will replace them immediately.

3. Quick Response

Depending on the neighbourhood, an armed patrol can take between 5-10 minutes to circle the block and race to the spot of disturbance. However, with an alarm system, the security firm can have a team at the location within minutes of alert.

This is not to say that armed patrols are no good. But they should be an addition, not the major security you have. If you own a research laboratory or consistently require armed patrols, then you should by all means get some. But when you do, make sure the security firm or organizations whose employees you’ll be hiring have the following qualities:

* They are Reputable

You don't want an untrustworthy organization to handle your security detail. This way, your security could still be compromised and your life put at risk.

* They carry out Thorough Background Checks

This is not just about running their potential employees’ names through a public record service. We’re talking about a full deployment of a Private Investigation firm or even their PI individuals. Typically, armed patrol employees with huge debts particularly from gambling or drugs are a no-no. This is because they can always be tempted to sell you out; after all you’re just paying them salaries via their firms while their buyers can offer them a whole new life.

In conclusion, armed patrols are good, but they work better with an awesome security system in place.

How 24 Hour Monitoring Can Benefit You

Over 1.5 million homes are typically broken into every year in a country like Australia and the properties stolen from many of these homes could cumulatively worth billions. Unfortunately, not many people are aware that thieving and burglary on this scale is happening yearly and is likely to increase considering the current global economy.

This is the more reason every home owner requires some form of security monitoring in their property. When it comes to security, most people do not see any reasons why they need 24 hour monitoring. This article is aimed at helping them understand the benefits more.

1. Instant Notification and Alert

The standard alarm system and motion detector tends to just scare away the thieves and burglars by their sirens and noise. Not just that, neighbours are immediately aware that there is suspicious activity going on in the residence or office, thus making them get in touch with the police. In essence, this is dependent on the kindness of the neighbours.

With a 24 hour alarm system however, the control panel at the security firm is immediately triggered and a call is placed to the system which is usually manned by security professionals 24/7. This way, you can be sure that whether it’s 2a.m or 12 noon, your home and offices premises are secured and under watch until you deactivate it.

2. Rapid Response Team to the Rescue

As soon as the control panel is dialled, most security firms immediately collaborate with the police or assign a rapid response team to the location to check out the cause of the intrusion. Where you have cameras installed, they can easily watch the activities of the burglars, get their identities and even cross check them with known criminals in the area.

3. Equipments are always in top shape

Unlike the typical security alarms that you can just install, these security systems are consistently in touch with the “source” or control panel which scans them intermittently for inactivity, low battery power, no contact and so on.

In cases of technical faults, the devices are quickly repaired and restored back by the firm. In cases where there is an intrusion, for example, a mains shutdown, the firm will immediately contact you to find out if you are aware of the development.

If you’re not, they immediately send in a team to check if the fault is technical or caused by unscrupulous elements trying to break into the property.

4. Vehicular Tracking and Personal Safety Response

With a 24 hour monitoring plan, your car can be tracked and monitored for unusual activity. In medical emergency cases such as car accidents, heart attacks and cardiac arrests, medical teams can be immediately deployed to the location thus ensuring that everything is done to safeguard your life and that of your loved ones.

There is no limit or end to the benefits of 24 hour security systems. In these days where anything can happen, these monitoring devices are part of your safety measures. What is Armed Patrol and Do I Need Armed Patrol?

They are Reputable
You don't want an untrustworthy organization to handle your security detail. This way, your security could still be compromised and your life put at risk.

They carry out Thorough Background Checks
This is not just about running their potential employees’ names through a public record service. We’re talking about a full deployment of a Private Investigation firm or even their PI individuals. Typically, armed patrol employees with huge debts particularly from gambling or drugs are a no-no. This is because they can always be tempted to sell you out; after all you’re just paying them salaries via their firms while their buyers can offer them a whole new life.

In conclusion, armed patrols are good, but they work better with an awesome security system in place.
